Pontormo's House

The house where Jacopo Carucci, known as Pontormo, was born, is now part of the national Association of Memorable Houses and was purchased by the Municipality of Empoli in 1995, the year after the important exhibition organized by the Municipality on the occasion of the five-hundredth anniversary of the death of the illustrious artist.

In it, objects and works of art are on display, reminding us of the master's artistic expression; for example, it includes duplicates of papers with drawings by Jacopo, done in preparation for the Saints that he painted on the altarpiece of the nearby church of San Michele. There is also a beautiful edition, also a duplicate, of the artist's famous Diary. The links between the house and the painter are perfectly illustrated in a painting - a lovely ancient replica of the Madonna del Libro (Madonna of the Book) by Pontormo, the original edition of which is as yet unknown, "undoubtedly the most copied work" of his, "and, most probably, the most copied Madonna of the entire sixteenth century in Florence”. Also available for viewing, are the archaeological finds from the excavations carried during renovation of the building.

A multimedia system created specifically for these spaces allows you to delve into the period in which the artist lived, making better interpretation of the works of art possible.

The altarpiece depicting Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Michael is kept inside the nearby church of San Michele.
